If your cat suddenly starts urinating inappropriately, it is very important to check for medical issuesthat may be going on. We recommend you take your cat into the vet as soon as possible to check for problems with crystals, urinary tract infections or other problems.
Often medical issues are mistaken for behavioral issues when the cat is actually very uncomfortable and confused. When it hurts to urinate in the litterpan they will look for alternate places to go hoping to avoid the pain.
Defecating outside the litterbox can be caused by medical issues as well.
General Litterbox Guidelines
The number of litter boxes should equal the number of cats you have plus one.(Ex. 2 cats need 3 litter boxes)
Litter – Clumping, low dust and unscented
Scoop pans daily
Change all the litter every 2 to 4 weeks
Wash litter boxes with mild soap and cold water every month
Discard litter boxes after 1 year
Place litter boxes far from food
Place litter boxes far from sources of sudden, loud noises e.g. furnace, washing machine
Place 1 litter box on each floor of the home
Please talk to any one of our staff about litter box issues, we are glad to help!
This special litterbox was suggested by one of our clients, she had trouble with some of her cats standing in the box but "going" over the side of it.
One of our clients was having trouble with a cat who kept defecating in different places in the basement rather than the litterbox. He tried Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter on the advice of a friend and his kitty now uses the litterbox properly. http://www.preciouscat.com
Another one of our clients has been very happy with ground walnut litter. They say is has little dust and is very effective.
